Where Self Meets the Universe – IHOW #16
by Emmy Schaling

The practice is fundamentally an inquiry into a new understanding of humility. It releases humility from its inherited association with contraction, self-diminishment, and becoming small before something greater. In its place, it discovers a humility that arises through expansion, participation, and belonging.

As awareness expands from the body into the planetary and universal ecology, the practitioner encounters the immense scale of the systems in which human life is embedded. This naturally awakens reverence and awe. At the same time, the practice brings forward a complementary awareness of the dignity, significance, and unique responsibility of being human.

The deeper movement is the cultivation of an interior spaciousness in which humility, confidence, reverence, and human significance can arise as dimensions of one integrated state.

Key themes

  • Humility without self-diminishment
Humility is experienced not by making oneself smaller, but by becoming conscious of the greater ecology in which one participates.
  • Reverence through expanded awareness
Moving from the personal field into the planetary, solar, and universal fields awakens awe through direct experience rather than inherited ideas.
  • Human dignity and cosmic significance
The immensity of the universe does not render the human meaningless. It calls the human being to become more fully present to their distinctive place and contribution.

Steps

  • 1: Clear your mental and physical space, be comfortably sitting or standing up.
  • 2: Listen to the guiding voice and prepare yourself as if to go on a long journey.
  • 3: Follow the simple instructions to locate humility in your system.
  • 4: Surrender to the unfolding of the journey.
  • The integration of seeming polarities
Reverence and confidence, humility and dignity, smallness and significance are brought into one interior state.
  • Liberation from inherited conventions
The practice cleanses humility of cultural and religious projections, allowing it to be rediscovered somatically and energetically.
  • Preparation for service and leadership
The purpose is not only personal healing. It is to cultivate the interior readiness to guide, facilitate, lead, consult, and participate in healing processes.
  • An emerging human capacity
Within IHOW Octave Two, the practice develops the ability to sustain multiple fields of awareness and seemingly divergent qualities simultaneously.

The central proposition

The practice could be distilled into this:

We do not become humble by diminishing ourselves. We become humble by awakening to the vastness of the ecology in which we participate, and we become confident by recognizing that this vast ecology has entrusted each human being with a distinctive part to play.

This practice forms a guided tour along the inquiry about humility. It may be accompanied by adjacent qualities like awe and wonder. A tour that may have an expanding effect, encompassing the more of us in the bigger picture. There is a humility that causes shrinking; yet the marriage with a different kind of humility, possibly a universal capacity, may well have a dignifying and healing effect on all our systems.

Rob Eising

My life is forming as I live it, explore it, evaluate and refine it. So, what to say about that evolving story? The first instrument I discovered at a very young age was our family breakfast table.  With my little spoon I hit all things standing on that table; plates, glasses, cups, jars with metal or plastic caps, the cheese, fruits,  the wicker basket, everything in the district... Both the sound that each object reflected back to me, as the variance of vibration in the spoon that my hand could sense was a gift, transferring a message: this is my nature. Is music the artful translation of the expression that things, liveforms, plants, animals, humans, that creation is feeding us with, in every connective exchange we dare to engage with?
