Turning Darkness Into Opportunity: A Conversation with Daniel Görtz

Aviv Shahar with Daniel Görtz

September 22, 2026

What if the darkest moment is also the one holding the highest creative potential? In this wide-ranging conversation with Aviv Shahar, political philosopher Daniel Görtz, better known by his pen name Hanzi Freinacht, and a key voice in the Nordic meta-modern school, sits inside the "pitch-black darkness" of the present and asks what might be trying to emerge through it.

Is what we are living through a decline, a mutation, or a crucible of birth — or all of these at once? Görtz resists easy diagnosis, tracing a "trauma-driven AI revolution" where political, financial, and technological power converge in a few unhealed hands. But rather than name a single culprit, he keeps turning the question: What if the culture wars are really people chasing their own tails around collective trauma? What would it take to build a "pre-distributive justice" that heals as it redistributes?

The dialogue moves from geopolitics to the brainstem, from Marx's third volume to masculinity workshops, from gender polarization to the responsibility carried by those who see clearly yet struggle to act. It closes on an unexpectedly personal note, with an invitation to "show up."

An invitation to sit with the questions, not rush to the answers, some notable points:

  • A trauma-centered diagnosis: Görtz argues that beneath epistemic, spiritual, and governance crises lies unhealed trauma, the "pressure point" that most unlocks the capacity for transformation.
  • Theoretical optimism, empirical pessimism: weaving Plato and Aristotle, he holds a sober read of the present against a genuine belief that something wiser is structurally possible.
  • Beyond the culture war: he reframes surface conflict as a shared wound that could bridge, rather than deepen, the divide.
  • "Show up": a candid closing challenge to meta-theorists: escape theoretical narcissism, take care of yourselves, and act in the world.

This conversation is part of the continuing Portals discovery into what is emerging on the frontiers of human experience in this time of profound change. Information about upcoming special events can be found on the Events page. Also visit and subscribe to our YouTube channel.

We must not forget that misunderstanding and crisis and disintegration has been a part of it all along and, at the end of the day, new consciousness, new wonder, new beauty, new aliveness, new childhood, new life, new morality, new conscience, not just consciousness, conscience has evolved again, and again, and again.
