What if the recurring waves of religious renewal throughout history have been responses to an evolutionary current seeking fresh expression? And what if the current arriving now is seeking expression not through another religion, but through a new universal human capacity?
In this conversation, Aviv Shahar, together with Karen Heney and Kyriaki Nikandrou, continues the Universalis inquiry into the deeper story of religion and what may now be opening in the human journey.
The conversation begins by exploring the anatomy of religious emergence. Behind the scriptures, doctrines, rituals, and institutions of a religion, there is an earlier event: a founder or finder enters into profound communion with an essence, a living presence that carries particular energetic qualities, guidance, healing capacities, and transformative influence. A teaching arises from this encounter, and a community gathers around the living presence it releases.
Over time, however, something changes. The vibrant connection experienced by the founder becomes increasingly difficult to sustain. Structures arise to preserve and transmit what was discovered. Teachings become codified, rituals formalized, and institutions established. Gradually, the original communion can become more distant, leaving later generations with the forms and formulations of an experience they may no longer directly know.
And still, the impulse to reconnect with essence has never disappeared.
Throughout the epoch, individuals and communities have repeatedly sought to recover direct contact with the source behind the inherited forms. From this enduring search emerged mystical and esoteric currents within and alongside the major religious traditions.
The conversation traces seven waves of religious renewal: from early Gnostic and mystical movements, through Kabbalistic, Christian, Sufi, Vajrayana and Hermetic streams; the Renaissance revival and later esoteric movements; the integrating impulses of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and the soul-spirit searches that bring the inquiry toward our own time.
Despite their extraordinary diversity, these movements can be viewed as expressions of a recurring human intuition: there must be something alive behind the form, and it must be possible to reconnect with it.
Seen through the Sevenfold Epochal frame, these renewals represent recurring efforts to rejuvenate the Yellow impulse of communion and realignment, reopening access to the living source when inherited structures could no longer provide it.
The historical journey then brings the inquiry into the present.
Might the spiritual and soul searches of recent generations represent the beginnings of a seventh wave, now intensifying inside the Indigo-Violet transition?
The proposal explored in the conversation is that a new universal essence and a new universal conductivity may now be becoming available. If so, the seventh wave need not become another religion or another institutional structure. Its expression may take forms very different from those through which humanity encountered the sacred in previous centuries.
What might it mean to become available to this new current?
And what capacities would we need to develop in order to participate consciously in what is seeking to emerge?
Key Ideas to Reflect On and Act Upon:
- Explore the archetypal pattern of religious emergence: a founder or finder enters into communion with an essence, a living presence becomes the catalyst for teaching, and a community gathers around that encounter.
- Consider essence not merely as an idea or belief, but through the qualities attributed to direct communion with it: energetic nourishment, guidance, healing, inspiration, and the impulse toward inner transformation.
- Recognize the octave step-down through which living communion can gradually become structured doctrine, rules, rituals, and eventually habitual forms disconnected from the experience that originally inspired them.
- Trace the seven waves of renewal as expressions of humanity’s recurring search to reconnect with the originating essence behind religious forms.
- Explore the esoteric and mystical impulse as a persistent declaration that second-hand knowledge is not enough, and that direct interior knowing and communion remain possible.
- Consider whether the soul-spirit searches of recent generations are part of a seventh wave of renewal, arising within the Indigo-Violet intensification of our time.
- Ask what it would mean if this emerging current is not seeking to create another religion, but to awaken a new capacity for universal communion and participation in the human being.

Throughout the ages, there were wonderful and extraordinary people who, time and again, searched to make the reconnection back to the source, back to the realm of essence.
From the first century to today there were ongoing recurring waves of people who recognized that as the advent of religion was experiencing the general direction that humanity had taken, more into the material world, with the building of forms of structure around the religion, that their job, their calling, was to aspire to reconnect to the realm of essence.
